The Spodek arena in Katowice has long been a symbol of futurism. Its saucer-like shape already suggested otherworldly visions when it opened decades ago. On this Polaroid, bathed in green and yellow tones, the building appears beautiful and uncanny at the same time. The analog photograph turns the arena into both a relic of past dreams and a projection of future anxieties. Much like artificial intelligence today, Spodek embodies a dual perspective: hope and fear. People look at it and imagine progress, technology, connection, even transcendence. At the same time, its alien form recalls uncertainty, the loss of control, and the unknown. AI technology, too, inspires both fascination and concern—promising creativity, efficiency, and new horizons, while raising questions of authenticity, agency, and trust. The Polaroid of Spodek captures this tension: between wonder and unease, between the familiar and the strange, between optimism for the future and anxiety about where it might take us.
